8th Notes Hi-Hat/Ride Accents, Part I

Akzente sind laute/betonte Schläge und werden mit einem „kleiner“-Zeichen über oder unter der Note markiert.

Auf HiHat und Ride-Becken erzeugst Du Akzente, indem Du abwechselnd mit Stockschaft und -spitze schlägst: Schlage für den Akzent zunächst nach unten mit dem Stockschaft auf den HiHat-Rand (oder die Beckenkuppe). Der unbetonte Schlag mit der Stockspitze entsteht quasi ‚nebenbei‘ in der Bewegung nach oben.

Am Anfang gar nicht so leicht, aber es lohnt sich: Akzente sind das Salz in der Suppe und ein Grund, warum Top-Drummer so gut klingen!

Accents are loud/emphasized strokes marked with a “smaller than” sign above or below the note.

You create accents on the HiHat or Ride Cymbal by alternating strokes with the shaft and tip of the stick: for the accent, hit the HiHat rim (or cymbal bell) on the downward movement with the shaft of the stick. The unaccented stroke with the stick tip is created ‘incidentally’ when moving upward.

This might be difficult at first, but it’s worth it: accents spice up your playing and are one reason why top drummers sound so good!
