The easiest variations to play a Fill-In are a) only on Snare Drum (No. 01) or b) around the Kit over Snare and Toms (No. 02), for sure.

But it sounds much more interesting to play other distributions over the drums – which is called “orchestration”. This makes Fill-Ins harder to read and play at first, but it’s worth the effort: interesting orchestrations are one of the reasons why top drummers sound so good!

Your Fill-Ins sound even more exciting when you incorporate the Bass Drum. Your foot then takes over the task of another hand – this is why these fills are also referred to as “hand-foot combinations”.

Here you play Snare and Tom 3 simultaneously and increase the volume over the bar (which is called “Crescendo”). Especially good for indicating important song transitions or the end of a song.
